How To Choose the Best Baby Sunscreen for Your Little One

Sunscreen for babies is specially designed to be gentle on their skin and provide them with effective protection from UV rays. In this guide, we will share some tips on how to choose the best baby sunscreen for your little one.

Is it Necessary to Use Baby Sunscreen?

In today’s times, skin problems are becoming more common in children and adolescents. So, it is necessary to start using sunscreen at an early age. Protecting a child from direct sun exposure can greatly reduce the risk of skin problems. Sunburn is damage that is visible to human eyes, but some damage is not always visible. Due to this very reason, The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that you should use sunscreen for your kids' healthy skin.

There are two types of sun rays that are harmful to the skin:-

  • UVA rays cause skin aging and skin cancer, such as melanoma.
  • UVB rays cause sunburns, and cataracts also contribute to skin cancer.

How to Choose the Best Baby Sunscreen?

Here are some tips to consider while choosing the best sunscreen for your baby:-

Look for Mineral Ingredients

Ingredients like non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are known to be healthy for baby skin. So, look for sunscreens that contain these ingredients. These ingredients remain on the surface of the skin and reflect UV rays, providing a physical barrier against the sun. Mineral sunscreens are safe and non-irritating for baby's sensitive skin.

Avoid Questionable Ingredients

Check the ingredient list and ensure that the product does not contain harmful ingredients such as fragrance, parabens, phthalates, and phenoxyethanol. Opt for hypoallergenic sunscreens that are less likely to cause allergic reactions. Look for natural moisturizing and soothing ingredients like shea butter, avocado oil, and aloe vera.

Opt for Easy Application

Choose a sunscreen that is easy to apply, whether it's a lotion, stick, or spray. Babies can be squirmy, so having a sunscreen that goes on smoothly can make the process much easier. Make sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

Check for Broad-Spectrum Protection

Look for a sunscreen labeled as 'broad-spectrum' to ensure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays can lead to sunburn. Broad-spectrum protection will keep your baby's skin safe from both types of rays.

Use Spf 30 to Spf 50

The SPF (sun protection factor) number indicates how long the sunscreen will protect your baby's skin from UVB rays compared to no sunscreen. For babies, it's recommended to use SPF 30 or 50 for adequate protection. Keep in mind that reapplying sunscreen is crucial for continued protection.
